It is no surprise that the practice of yoga is increasingly popular among Black women. Although yoga has traditionally been associated with white women, a 1975 article in Ebony focused on the increasing number of Black women practicing yoga. Williford says yoga can be used to reduce stress and build community. Yoga can help to reduce the risk of chronic illness due to its holistic nature. Here are just a few ways yoga can benefit Black women.

In a recent interview, twenty Black women from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences and the benefits of yoga. These women have encouraged other Black women from diverse backgrounds to become more active and find peace within. A rise in Black participation in wellness activities and regular practice may be a result of rising racial tension, and the pressure of being Black woman living in predominantly white societies. However, there is still much more to be done to promote yoga and make it accessible to a wider audience.

Black yoga teachers are not only promoting yoga but also helping to create spaces that are culturally sensitive. Many of these black communities are in the midst of economic and social problems. As an example, the Litehouse Wellness project in Dallas offers classes at the Pan African Connection. Changa Bell started the "Black Male Yoga Initiative", in 2015. Many Black women are beginning to integrate yoga into their lives. And by ensuring that these women are getting the proper training, more opportunities for participation will arise.


Satya has created diverse and inclusive spaces for yoga, as well as a movement to promote diversity in yoga.
