The Yoga Sutras of Patajali are a collection of 196 sutras written in Sanskrit. The texts were composed in the early years CE by Patanjali who compiled the wisdom of older yoga traditions. These sutras were originally a work in progress. They are now one of the most important resources for practicing yoga worldwide.

There are four chapters to the Yoga Sutras. The first one is devoted to enlightenment and the next four chapters discuss the process to reach the goal. 52 sutras describe the benefits of meditation, yoga, and pilates (niyama).
