The CrossFit Games 2021 are on the horizon, and many of the participants are incredibly excited. Apart from the usual men's and ladies' competitions, there will be some women's events. We're all familiar with the Reebok's equipment, the Pegboard contest, and the Cutting system. But what do we know about the womens' competition? Continue reading to learn more! Women are competing

The 2021 Crossfit Games women's competition opened this morning with a swim event. Jonne Koski, Tia-Clair Toomey Orr, and TiaClair Toomey Orr were the winners in the first event. Koski took the overall title after she held her lead through the entire competition. Tall and Eramoo O'Connell came in second and third, respectively. This was the first Games event for women and the women's team hoped to finish the podium.

The women's contest is filled with high-level athletes. The field features nine athletes, including a 19 year-old Australian powerhouse who won this competition last year. Other contenders are Australian athlete Kara Saunders, who finished second in Australia and eleventh worldwide in 2020. Andrea Nisler (who competed as a team in the 2018 division, finishing third in the United States and fifteenth overall for 2020) is another rising star. The Women's competition will feature these athletes as well as Sara Sigmundsdottir (an Icelandan competitor who won the first place medal at World Crossfit Games earlier last year).

Pegboard contest

Pegboard competition at Crossfit Games 2021 was the first. It was also added to the Games' Olympic summer program. Toomey-Orr held the record for most Games wins with 30. Sager won Event 11 (for men) and was awarded his third Games win. While there were many tie-breakers, ToomeyOrr's dominance was enough to win the contest.

CrossFit Games are a competition where athletes focus on ten skills that improve their physical fitness: speed, agility, cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility. Competitors are tested on their grip strength and coordination in the Pegboard contest. The competitors compete by holding two wooden stakes between their fingers. After completing the Pegboard, the competition was intense and athletes felt a sense of accomplishment.


Cutting system

CrossFit Games has a new cutting system for individual competition. While it's not as extreme or drastic as in previous Games, this year is very different. Because the competition is made up of 15 events, a cut to 30 athletes after the seventh or eighth event is very likely. CrossFit must also answer the question of how it will adjust the points following cuts. The scoring table used in the 2019 games was nearly identical to the one used in 2021, so it's likely that this will continue to be the case.

This year's field consists of 236 athletes, making it the largest in the history of the CrossFit Games. Major cuts are made in the first six events. The field is then reduced to 75 athletes. To determine the top ten, the top 30 athletes compete in a sprint tandem. From there, the top twenty athletes compete in the six remaining events. Castro's system has been criticized by veterans Games athletes who feel that the cuts are too significant.

Reebok's equipment

Reebok announced new CrossFit Games footwear, clothing and other equipment. The Nano X1 is the new shoe. They are made to meet multiple fitness needs. Reebok claims this shoe is "the shoe that will fit all your fitness needs," but it's more like a regular training shoe. DuPont’s Kevlar material is used to make the upper of this shoe, which promotes breathability as well as durability. The shoe's responsiveness is enhanced by the RopePro tech and a firm midsole.

CrossFit and Reebok's partnership will end in 2020. Reebok has been sponsoring the Games for over a decade and now it is clear that its involvement will be declining. Reebok will not fund the Games' prize pool, but it will still make all the equipment and apparel worn by athletes, even the Reebok gear. The company will no more refer to itself by the name "Reebok Fitness Games", as it does right now.

What should I have before I go to the gym?
